This is really quite amazing, Jeff. Eastern Washington was covered by a huge volcanic lava flow in prehistoric times. We have huge basaltic columns, which tend to be pentagonal in shape, created by the rapidly cooling lava. The columns are not nearly as wide, however, and I am not aware of anywhere that they form a flat "mosaic" such as found in this formation at Okinawa.

So strange and interesting. Love this.

Wow. I'll bet we're seeing the tops of basalt columns like at the "devil's post pile" in California and the recent submission to the Rocks group by Sergey Simonovsky, Isle of Staffa near Scotland.
